**Violet Units to be Established in La Paz: Rut de la Fuente**
The newly reappointed director of Public Safety in La Paz, Rut de la Fuente, has outlined a strategic vision for the city’s development and security over the next three years. Building on her previous tenure, she emphasized the significant challenges and reforms ahead, particularly as La Paz enters its second term under Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero.
Central to this vision is the Municipal Development Plan 2024-2027, especially the third pillar focused on security strategies through sectoral divisions. “Our goal is to enhance these sectors with population density, business, school statistics, and crime data while also maximizing our operational capabilities,” de la Fuente explained. The prior administration under Mayor Quiroga had already led to the creation and redistribution of nine sectors into 29 quadrants to better address crime hotspots.
A crucial aspect of their strategy involves constant police patrol presence across these quadrants to deter crime. “It’s about adapting the Police Department’s operations to better serve the community, especially in the areas with high crime incidence,” de la Fuente noted. This adjustment includes equipping officers with necessary resources like vehicles, uniforms, and weapons.
One of the headline initiatives is the introduction of “Violet Units,” which aim to combat gender-based violence more effectively. La Paz ranks second nationwide in family violence cases, prompting a dedicated focus on this issue. These units are designed for fast, competent responses to incidents of domestic violence. The community’s safety will also be fortified by a certified police force, with certification rates climbing from less than 20% to nearly 90%.
Additionally, legislative advancements now offer stronger legal recourse against property crimes such as burglary. Reforms transitioned these crimes from being complaint-based to investigated by default, leading to a 10% drop in reported crimes this year.
De la Fuente concluded by stressing the city’s commitment to improving officer compensation, promotion opportunities, and overall police morale. La Paz’s residents have expressed a 75% satisfaction rate with public safety, setting a goal to further uplift community confidence and reduce crime rates.
