La Paz Crime Surge Concerns

La Paz faces a spike in armed robberies and abductions, sparking fear among local entrepreneurs. Authorities are urged to act swiftly to restore safety and combat rising crime rates.

**Rise in Assaults and Kidnappings in La Paz**

La Paz is witnessing a concerning surge in armed robberies and abductions targeting local businesses. One recent incident involved a businesswoman named Nelva “N,” who fell victim to a terrifying experience. On October 3rd, while visiting a shopping center Sam’s Club at Plaza Cola de Ballena, she was confronted by two armed men in the parking lot. They forced her into the backseat of her maroon KIA Sorento and drove her 2.5 kilometers away to Chametla. Accompanying them was a grey car without plates or visible occupants. The ordeal lasted about 40 minutes before the assailants took 10,000 pesos from her and left her behind. Distressed, Nelva managed to drive to a nearby Liverpool store, where she was helped by police and paramedics.

Another similar crime happened on October 4th, when Luis Navarro, a local business owner, was robbed in the heart of La Paz. Luis was attacked after closing his fruit store, sustaining a head injury after being struck with a firearm. The attackers stole 40,000 pesos and drove away in his stolen Silverado truck.

Despite having CCTV footage of the incidents, local authorities have yet to apprehend the culprits. The surveillance video shows a young man with a beard and cap loitering near Luis’s store, signaling to two others armed with a weapon resembling a machete or baseball bat. These attacks are fueling fear among business owners engaging in food, flower, and grocery sales, leading to concerns of increasing extortion and coercion tactics.

Many local entrepreneurs, like Jorge Luis, who runs a nearby flower shop, are taking measures to ensure safety, such as instructing staff not to resist in a robbery but instead to comply with demands. Others, like Ramón, who runs a food stall close to Navarro’s shop, express concerns about potential extortion schemes disrupting the peace and security of their community.

Efforts to curb the surge in crime have been emphasized by officials. The State Public Security Bureau is prioritizing the identification and arrest of those involved. The governor stressed the importance of eliminating any potential ties between law enforcement and criminals to maintain governance and justice. Initial crime statistics for 2024 reveal that Baja California Sur has already experienced 345 business-related robberies, averaging 43 a month.

Authorities affirm continued inter-agency collaboration to restore safety and prevent future incidents as these crimes become focal points in ongoing security meetings.

**Additional Concerns Surrounding Local Crime**

In the wake of recent robberies, La Paz’s citizens are increasingly expressing unease over rising crime rates. A similar trend seems to be taking place, as new reports suggest that small business owners in other parts of Baja California Sur are experiencing frequent intimidation and extortion attempts. This includes anonymous threats demanding money for fabricated debts, as reported by a local grocery store manager.

These developments underscore the urgency for stronger preventive measures and community vigilance. The local government remains committed to addressing these issues promptly through enhanced security presence and strategic efforts involving local law enforcement and community leaders.
