Tijuana, September 25, 2024 – Esteemed coach and former football player José Luis “Kabuky” Martínez received an honorary award from the Baja California Student Football Organization (OEFA) on Saturday, September 21, during a ceremony held before the match between Águilas and Zorros at the Margarita Astiazarán de Fimbres Stadium in Tijuana.

The award was presented by OEFA Commissioner Argenis García Luna, recognizing Martínez for his significant contributions as head coach of various teams, notably the Instituto México. He was accompanied by his former players Héctor Castellanos, Armando Ledesma, Armando López, Vicente Pérez, Ramiro Thomas, and José Luis Vázquez, as he accepted the honor for the 2024 season that bears his name.

Martínez’s impact on the sport traces back to 1977 when he persuaded the Instituto México’s board to establish a football program and adopt the eagle as its mascot, an emblem still cherished today. As a player, he led his team to their first championship in the Municipal Football League (Limfa) in 1980 by defeating Zopilotes from the Altamira neighborhood. He continued his studies at the University of Monterrey before returning to assume leadership of the Águilas program in 1983.

Under his guidance, the Águilas secured several titles, including victories in the Municipal Football League against Cetys Tijuana and the Bajacalifornian College Athletic Association (Acabc) against Aguiluchos from Tecate in the early ’80s. He went on to coach other prestigious teams like Apaches in the Limfa Major League and later became a commentator for San Diego Chargers games on XEXX Tijuana radio broadcasts.

During the heartfelt ceremony, Martínez expressed his pride and gratitude for the acknowledgment of his efforts to elevate the sport in Baja California.
