In the early hours of August 21, 2024, a group of armed men stormed a residence located on 7a Poniente, between 2a and 3a Sur, in the Esquipulas neighborhood of Villaflores, Chiapas. Their target was Ariel Grajales Rodas, the director of the digital news outlet Villaflores. According to local reports, Grajales was rushed to the Bicentenario General Hospital by family members where he is currently in critical condition.

Before this violent attack, Grajales had been vocal about “cobro de piso” or extortion practices in the Frailesca region. In November 2022, he was honored with an award in recognition of his three decades as a journalist during the 146th anniversary celebration of the founding of Villaflores.

The State Attorney General’s Office has initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for this violent act. The District Attorney’s Office in Fraylesca confirmed that they received an emergency call around midnight about the incident involving the journalist.

Mexico continues to be one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Recent statistics show an alarming increase in attacks and threats against members of the press.
