Special Prosecutor José Agustín Ortiz Passes Away

Family members of José Agustín Ortiz Pinchetti mourned the passing of the prosecutor specializing in Electoral Crimes, who had held the position since March 11, 2019.

“It is with deep sorrow and pain that we announce the passing of our beloved José Agustín Pinchetti, his wife, children, and family. He passed away on August 3, 2024,” the family stated. The esteemed Mexican lawyer and former academic of the Universidad Iberoamericana was well-respected in his field.

Ortiz Pinchetti was born on May 13, 1937, in Mexico City. He was appointed to lead the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Electoral Crimes on February 8, 2019, by the Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero.

Throughout his career in public service, Ortiz Pinchetti served as a citizen advisor on the General Council of the Federal Electoral Institute in 1994. He was also the Secretary of Government of the Federal District from 2000 to 2003 and served as a federal deputy in the LIX Legislature from 2003 to 2006.

He earned a master’s degree in Economic Law from the UIA and authored several books, including “The Coming Democracy” and “Private Reflections and Public Testimonies.”

The President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, described him as an “authentic democrat” upon his passing. “We walked together for a long time and will remain friends and companions forever. Hugging Loretta, Mariana, and the entire family,” he wrote on his social media account on Sunday, August 4.

Loretta Ortiz Ahlf, a Supreme Court Justice and the wife of the late specialized prosecutor, also shared her thoughts: “He was a loving man of deep convictions and persistent struggles. Despite the immense sorrow of his departure, I cherish the joy of having walked by his side.”
