Husband Blames Hospital for Death

Isaías Copado Ocampo accuses HGT of medical negligence in wife Michelle Montero Zurita’s death following a bone marrow examination, sparking investigations and queries by state authorities.

### Husband Alleges Medical Negligence in Wife’s Death at HGT

Isaías Copado Ocampo has accused the Hospital General de Tijuana (HGT) of medical negligence that led to the tragic death of his 21-year-old wife, Michelle Montero Zurita. Michelle passed away on September 2nd, 2024, following a bone marrow examination. Isaías claims the procedure was mishandled, resulting in a fatal injury inflicted by the hematologist who allegedly punctured her heart and lung during the injection.

Initially, Michelle was treated at the Hospital General de Tecate from August 31st to September 2nd due to low platelet and red blood cell levels. She was later transferred to HGT in stable condition for bone marrow testing. According to Isaías, complications arose during the procedure performed on the second floor of HGT, leading to Michelle losing consciousness and being unresponsive to resuscitation efforts.

Isaías was informed by HGT’s subdirector and a social worker that Michelle’s frail health was the cause of her death. However, he was not notified of the potential risks associated with the bone marrow extraction and was denied the name of the attending specialist. Furthermore, no autopsy was performed on Michelle’s body due to the hospital’s lack of refrigeration facilities, compelling the family to remove the body immediately.

Following Michelle’s cremation, Isaías lodged a formal complaint for homicide with the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE). Miguel Romero Flores, the delegate of IMSS-Bienestar in Baja California, has requested HGT to initiate a review protocol to determine any medical responsibility. The state Secretary of Health has also been instructed to arrange a meeting with Isaías this week. Despite these assurances, Isaías has yet to be contacted by HGT or state authorities. The Baja California State Human Rights Commission (CEDHBC) has opened an investigation into the case.
