**Honoring Patricia van Rhijn: A Pioneer in Children’s Book Publishing**

Patricia van Rhijn Armida, a prominent figure in the Mexican publishing industry, was recently honored with the “Homenaje al Mérito Editorial” at the International Book Fair of Guadalajara. This esteemed recognition celebrates her extensive career of over forty years dedicated to editing and publishing children’s books. The acknowledgment plaque was presented by José Trinidad Padilla López and Marisol Schulz, President and Director General of the fair, respectively.

During the ceremony, Marisol Schulz emphasized Patricia’s significant contributions: “Patricia’s work is evident to all who have seen her tireless dedication in the fair, her innovative ideas, and her commitment to transforming how children in Mexico engage with literature.”

Patricia’s editorial journey began within the Secretariat of Public Education and later as the head of CIDCLI, a publishing house she founded in 1980, focusing on children’s literature by leading Spanish-language authors. Reflecting on her career’s beginnings, Patricia shared, “I ventured into publishing over 45 years ago, starting with a collection of literary classics. This was my introduction to the editorial world, an opportunity I’m forever grateful for.”

In a candid moment, she revealed that she started her publishing venture out of defiance. After being dismissed from the Secretariat for traveling to the Montreal Book Fair without authorization, she decided to pursue her passion for children’s books—a genre that was then nearly non-existent in Mexico. Her rebellious choice paved the way for her to build a catalog of original Spanish-language children’s literature in her home garage.

Thanks to her persistence and vision, Patricia has played a crucial role in the promotion and dissemination of children’s and young adult literature across numerous book fairs, both nationally and internationally, including those in Gijón, Madrid, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Bologna, Bogotá, Québec, New York, and London.

Several works from CIDCLI, under her leadership, have earned multiple national and international accolades. Eloísa Bonilla articulated Patricia’s impact, noting her participation in various advocacy efforts for the genre at prominent literary events.
