## Hermes Millán Unveils His Poetry Collection “Lo Tango que Más Tengo”
**By Enrique Mendoza**
On August 10th in Tijuana, Hermes Millán Redi presented his newest poetry collection, “Lo Tango que Más Tengo,” published by Jitanjáfora Ediciones. Organized by Lapicero Rojo Editorial, the literary event took place at El Camino de las Letras bookstore, featuring participation from Millán, Marcelo Fernández (the book’s prologuist), and Miguel Alberto Ochoa, editor from Lapicero Rojo Editorial.
Originally slated to speak as well, poet Ruth Vargas Leyva was unable to attend due to dental issues but ensured her prepared review reached attendees. Vargas Leyva praised Millán’s collection, indicating his work requires an understanding of tango to fully appreciate its depth. The poems pay homage to tango icons like Aníbal Troilo, Horacio Ferrer, and Astor Piazzola, weaving in themes of memory, exile, and the blend of past and present.
“Lo Tango que Más Tengo” stands out for its unique juxtaposition of festivity and melancholy, parroting tango’s inherent parody while adding a modern, critical perspective. Vargas Leyva emphasized the collection’s portrayal of dual landscapes—south and north, Atlantic and Pacific—creating a harmonious new narrative.
The poetry also delves into social and existential themes, reflecting the immigrant experience, nostalgia, and the contradictions of urban life. Millán’s use of lunfardo and intricate wordplay adds further layers to the rich tapestry of his work.
Here is an excerpt from Ruth Vargas Leyva’s review titled “Del Norte al Sur: Lo Tango que Más Tengo de Hermes Millán Redi”:
### From North to South: Lo Tango que Más Tengo by Hermes Millán Redi
*By Ruth Vargas Leyva*
Walking through a street in Seville, I was drawn into a narrow alley by the poignant, dolorous notes of a bandoneon. An elderly woman played “Adiós Nonino” without acknowledging my presence, filling the space with an air of existential exile. This deeply resonated with the thematic essence of a tango, capturing the sense of being out of place—a condition often expressed through its verses.
Tango, as a genre, encompasses love, transience, and both personal and collective tragedies. Literary figures like Borges, Cortázar, and Sábato integrated it into their works. Millán’s poetry continues this tradition, blending urban imagery and reinterpretations of classical tango themes to craft a narrative space for shared experiences and reflections.
Millán’s poetry, rich in metaphor and vernacular, evokes a sense of place and identity, much like the tango itself, fostering a deep connection to both north and south, Atlantic and Pacific, past and present.
