Haunted by a Poster

He couldn’t face them anymore – torn between cherished idols and family disapproval, a young man’s passion for music left a lasting scar on his heart and a vow unbroken.

### “He Couldn’t Face Them Anymore”

**By Editorial Team, September 6, 2024**

How often do we inflict harm without realizing it and fail to see the far-reaching consequences of our actions?

A dedicated teenager saved every cent from his weekly allowance: penny by penny, nickel by nickel, and dime by dime. Eventually, he had enough to buy the LP he had long desired.

—”Is that record yours?” his mother inquired.

—”Yes! I just bought it.”

Thrilled, he retreated to his room, carefully removed the record’s cover, and discovered a four-folded poster the size of the LP inside.

With great joy, he used tacks to pin it to the wall right beside his bed. The image of his idols kept him company as he played the record, mentally transporting him to the concert where it was recorded.

One day, his mother, unaware of the poster, entered his room to leave some clean clothes. The setting sun illuminated the seven gigantic faces of long-haired men staring right at her. Shocked, she screamed, summoning her husband and the boy into the room.

Upon seeing the image of these strangers, the father, a man of old-fashioned and rigid beliefs, flew into a rage and began berating his son and the poster. Without hesitation, he tore it from the wall.

The young boy, barely audible, murmured a feeble “No.” Tears streamed down his face as he watched his idols, his efforts, and his cherished record be destroyed by his father’s fury and mother’s regret.

Years later, this same band was set to perform at the old Toreo de Tijuana. The young man, with the same determination, saved enough money to buy a ticket to fulfill his dream of seeing them live. Despite his pleas and his mother’s attempts to intervene, his rigid and obstinate father never permitted him to attend the concert.

Although life gave him the chance to see the band anywhere in the world, that day in the early ’70s left him so traumatized that he vowed never to see Chicago, avoiding the painful memory forever.

Wherever you are, brother…

Sincerely,
Alberto López, Tijuana, B.C.
