### Kamala Harris Officially Nominated as Democratic Candidate; Trump Claims Mexico is Taking Advantage of the U.S.
**By Carlos Álvarez Acevedo**
On August 20, 2024, the Democratic Party officially nominated Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Timothy James Walz as their candidates for President and Vice President, respectively, during the second day of the Democratic National Convention. The announcement was followed by a live virtual rally from the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee where Harris and Walz expressed their gratitude and excitement for the nomination.
“We are honored to be your nominees,” said Harris, alongside Walz, as they addressed a stadium filled with supporters. The nomination process involved voting by the party’s 57 delegations.
Meanwhile, former President Donald John Trump, the Republican Party’s candidate in the upcoming election, claimed that Mexico is taking advantage of the United States by demanding billions of dollars just to engage in dialogue. At a campaign event in Michigan, Trump remarked, “Mexico really is taking advantage of our country. They want billions of dollars just to talk. They wouldn’t say that to me. I would tell them: ‘Oh, really? The trade relationship with Mexico is over.’ And they would say: ‘Sir, we will give you $2 billion.’”
Trump also recalled the 2019 incident when he threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico, prompting the Mexican government to deploy thousands of soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border to curb the flow of migrants.
