Gloria Zarza Guadarrama, a standout athlete from Mexico, has secured the first gold medal for her country at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Competing in the F54 shot put event, she achieved a winning mark of 8.06 meters at the Stade de France on the fourth day of athletic competitions.

In her six attempts, Zarza recorded throws of 7.81 meters, 8.06 meters (the winning throw), 8.01 meters, 7.89 meters, and 7.97 meters, with her fourth attempt being disqualified. Celebrating her victory, the wheelchair thrower rang the iconic champions’ bell, a fixture next to the Parisian track.

Reflecting on her achievement, Zarza expressed her joy: “I feel very happy, very content. This is the first gold medal for Mexico. At the end, they told me to approach and ring the bell. I saw some people in the stands waving the Mexican flag and shouting my name. I don’t know them, but it feels great to know that Mexicans are here supporting me.”

Zarza was the only competitor out of seven to surpass the eight-meter mark, a feat she achieved twice. She also bettered her performance from the World Championships held earlier in Kobe, Japan, in 2024, where she secured gold with a throw of 8.04 meters.

“This result is the culmination of much sacrifice and hard work. Training every day, supported by a multidisciplinary team and my coach, who is very important to the process. He guides the program, encourages me, and is always present. My coach and the entire team are crucial for this achievement,” Zarza added.
