Members of the Frente Nacional por la Familia are inviting the public to join the “Firmatón,” a campaign aimed at mobilizing efforts against the hormone therapy and gender-reassignment surgeries for minors. The president of the organization in Tijuana, Tomás Méndez, mentioned that a legislative initiative was presented to Congress on August 15 to put a “lock” on the proposal that allows minors to change their sex.

“This is a citizen’s initiative submitted to Congress, aiming to prevent the replication of the modification made to the Civil Code, like Dictamen 43, which approves minors to change their gender identity and birth certificate without parental consent,” Méndez explained.

On June 21 of this year, the Civil Code was reformed to include the “Ley de Infancias Trans,” allowing minors who identify with a different gender to be legally recognized as such. As a citizen’s initiative, they were initially asked for 500 signatures, but within two weeks, they have garnered 8,500 and expect to gather more through their social media platforms.

The initiative seeks to prevent minors from undergoing hormone treatments and gender-reassignment surgeries, arguing that such procedures, if deemed a right, would need to be included in the health system’s protocols, diverting resources that should be allocated to education.

“These 8,500 signatures could function as a citizen consultation because these laws have not been consulted or socialized; they are just introduced and voted upon. We realized that people were not informed and did not agree,” members of the group stated.

**Additional News on the Topic**

Following recent legal reforms in various countries regarding the recognition of gender identity, there has been an increasing public discourse around the appropriate age and conditions under which individuals can seek hormone therapy and gender-reassignment surgeries. For instance, in the U.S., several states have proposed similar laws restricting minors’ access to such medical procedures. In contrast, countries like Canada and parts of Europe have moved towards more inclusive policies, emphasizing the mental health support of transgender youth.

In the educational arena, schools across different regions are implementing policies to recognize and support transgender students, providing an inclusive environment that allows for name and gender changes on school records. Medical associations worldwide continue to evaluate the best practices for providing medical care to transgender youth, balancing the principles of informed consent, mental health well-being, and family involvement.
