**FIL UABC Continues to Expand: An Update on the Book Fair’s Growth**
The International Book Fair at the Autonomous University of Baja California (FIL UABC) is seeing significant growth. This year, the event is expanding its reach to include the cities of Mexicali, Tijuana, Ensenada, and Tecate. From March 27 to April 6, 2025, these locations will host a variety of events celebrating literature and culture. The fair aims to provide access to literary festivities that might otherwise be limited to Mexicali, allowing a larger audience to engage with the vibrant cultural scene.
Laura Figueroa Lizárraga, the Coordinator of FIL UABC, explained that last year marked a pivotal expansion for the event due to its 25th anniversary—prompting its extension to additional cities which was well-received by the public. This year’s fair is scheduled to run staggered events across the cities, allowing each location to host unique activities and discussions.
**Honoring Local Literary Figures**
A key highlight of this year’s fair is the homage being paid to poet and writer Ruth Vargas Leyva, who is recognized for her contributions to literature, particularly poetry penned by women in Baja California. Known for her pioneering efforts, Vargas Leyva has been instrumental in inspiring future generations of female poets.
Laura Figueroa emphasized the importance of honoring such individuals while they are still active in their fields, providing opportunities for readers and attendees to understand the impact of the honoree’s work.
**A Rich Program with Diverse Activities**
In addition to the tribute, FIL UABC will feature a wide array of activities including panel discussions, book readings, editorial presentations, concerts, and more. The fair will host 370 publishing imprints and 169 authors, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging experience for literature enthusiasts. This year, for the first time, the fair is introducing activities that reach outside its main venues, visiting schools to foster an appreciation for literature among young people.
**Significant Investment for Cultural Enrichment**
The event is backed by UABC’s substantial investment aimed at providing a cultural feast open to the public, fostering an appreciation for books and reading without charging entrance fees for most activities. This effort underscores the university’s commitment to community and culture.
**Additional News: The Diversity of FIL UABC 2025**
Apart from the main attractions of FIL UABC 2025, there are numerous authors and literary figures set to participate by presenting and discussing their work. Notable attendees include Benito Taibo, SofĂa Segovia, and many more across various locations. While each city will host different authors and experiences, the fair as a whole seeks to offer a diverse and fulfilling program.

For context around the expansion of literature events and potential influences, one could look at global literary events such as the Frankfurt Book Fair or the Hay Festival, which also emphasize diversity and access to literature. These events show how expanding access to literary culture can bolster community engagement and cultural enrichment, which is very much in line with FIL UABC’s current goals.
