The General Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) has initiated an investigation into several serious crimes, including illicit flight, unlawful use of air facilities, violation of immigration and customs laws, kidnapping, and even treason, following the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, in the United States.
According to a statement from the office headed by Alejandro Gertz Manero, the investigation file, registered under number SON/HSO/0001/882/2024, also includes other violations such as homicides, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and related offenses.
The FGR has conducted over one hundred procedures across various states in Mexico. With authorization from the U.S. government, ministerial police and forensic experts have also carried out investigations at the Santa Teresa Airport in New Mexico. Additionally, actions have been taken in the area known as Huertos del Pedregal in Culiacán and at an airfield that was possibly utilized for illicit purposes. They are requesting documents and information regarding air and immigration navigation between Mexico and the United States.
The FGR is coordinating with the Attorney General’s Office of Sinaloa to take over the case of Héctor Cuen’s homicide, believed to be linked to the broader investigation. Information pertinent to the case is also being sought from Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya.
**Zambada Reveals Meeting with Sinaloa Governor**
In a declaration released by his attorney Frank Pérez in the U.S., El Mayo Zambada detailed his alleged abduction facilitated by Joaquín “El Güero” Guzmán López, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. According to Zambada, he was taken against his will to the U.S. after attending a meeting with the current governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, and Héctor Melesio Cuen Ojeda, then rector of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa.
The meeting was designed to resolve administrative disputes over the university’s leadership and took place on July 25, 2024, at the Huertos del Pedregal event center outside Culiacán. Zambada described how he was escorted into a darkened room, ambushed, subdued, and taken to a private aircraft that flew to El Paso, Texas.
Zambada claims Héctor Cuen was killed at the same location and time as his own abduction, contrary to official reports stating Cuen was shot at a gas station by assailants attempting to steal his vehicle. Zambada also expressed sorrow over the disappearance of José Rosario Heras López and Rodolfo Chaidez, members of his security detail.
