### Former Deputy and Businessman from Mexicali Arrested in Mexico City; Found with a Gun and $5,800
Humberto Obet Montiel Herrera, a former federal deputy for Baja California, was arrested by officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC-CDMX) in Mexico City. The incident occurred at a Gotcha venue inside the Capital Reforma shopping mall, where Montiel Herrera was found in possession of a .380 caliber pistol and two loaded magazines.
According to reports from local media, Montiel Herrera, who is also a businessman, lacked the necessary legal permits to carry the firearm. During the arrest, he showed his identification badges to the SSC-CDMX officers, indicating that he had served as a federal deputy in the LXV Legislature of San Lázaro and was a member of the Commission of Justice.
The SSC-CDMX released an official statement detailing that Tourist Police officers responded to a report of a couple arguing in a cafe, with the man allegedly carrying a gun. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers conducted a preventive search and found Montiel Herrera with “a short firearm, two magazines, 58 hundred-dollar bills, a passport, a bank card, and other official identifications bearing his name.”
From 2013 to 2016, Montiel Herrera served as an adjunct deputy to Julio César Vásquez Castillo, who was elected through proportional representation by the Workers’ Party (PT).
In previous legal troubles, Montiel Herrera was reported by the Tijuana-based weekly magazine for potential involvement in fraud, fraudulent administration, and document forgery. His ex-wife, Edna Margarita Luna Vidaurrazaga, accused him of unilaterally removing her from their jointly founded company, Preconstrucciones Premier S.A. de C.V., by allegedly forging her signature. Luna Vidaurrazaga also filed a separate assault complaint against Montiel Herrera in June 2016.
