Former Mexican congressman and businessman Humberto Obet Montiel Herrera was arrested in Mexico City with an unlicensed firearm and $5,800, facing further allegations of fraud and assault.

### Former Congressman and Businessman from Mexicali Arrested in Mexico City; Found with Firearm and $5,800

Humberto Obet Montiel Herrera, a businessman from Mexicali and former federal congressman for Quintana Roo, was recently detained in Mexico City by the city’s Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC-CDMX) officers. Montiel Herrera was discovered at a Gotcha establishment inside the Capital Reforma shopping mall carrying a .380-caliber pistol along with two loaded magazines.

Capital media reports indicate that Montiel Herrera did not possess the legal authorization to carry the firearm. When confronted, he showed SSC-CDMX agents badges identifying him as a former federal congressman in the LXV Legislature of San Lázaro and a former member of the Justice Commission.

According to a report from the SSC-CDMX, tourism police responded to a tip about a couple arguing in a coffee shop, with the male reportedly carrying what appeared to be a pistol. Upon arrival and conducting a preventive search, the officers found that Montiel Herrera had a firearm, two magazines, 58 $100 bills, a passport, a bank card, and other official IDs on his person.

Montiel Herrera served as a substitute legislator in Baja California’s XXI Legislature from 2013 to 2016 for Julio César Vásquez Castillo from the Labor Party (PT).

On April 3, 2017, a report revealed that Montiel Herrera had been accused of fraud, fraudulent administration, and document forgery by his ex-wife, Edna Margarita Luna Vidaurrazaga. She claimed that she was unlawfully removed from their jointly-founded company, Preconstrucciones Premier S.A. de C.V., with her signature being forged in the process. Luna Vidaurrazaga subsequently filed for the restitution of the economic share she believed was rightfully hers and also reported an assault by her former husband in June 2016, from whom she officially separated in February that year.
