Humberto Obet Montiel Herrera, a former federal deputy from Baja California, was detained by Mexico City’s Civic Security Secretariat (SSC-CDMX) officers at a Gotcha store inside the Capital Reforma shopping mall. He was found in possession of a .380 caliber pistol with two loaded magazines.

According to local media, the businessman did not have a permit for the weapon. However, he presented credentials indicating he was a former federal deputy in the LXV Legislature of the House of Deputies and a past member of the Justice Commission.

SSC-CDMX shared in an official report that the Tourist Police received a tip about a couple arguing in a café, where the man was reportedly armed. Officers approached the scene, conducted a preventive search, and discovered Montiel Herrera with the firearm, $5,800 in $100 bills, a passport, a bank card, and other personal identifications.

From 2013 to 2016, Montiel Herrera served as a substitute deputy for Julio César Vásquez Castillo, who obtained his position through proportional representation nominated by the Labor Party (PT).

In April 2017, local news reported that Montiel Herrera was facing criminal charges from his ex-wife for fraud, fraudulent administration, and document forgery. Edna Margarita Luna Vidaurrezaga, his ex-spouse, accused him of unilaterally removing her from a joint enterprise they founded, Preconstrucciones Premier S.A. de C.V., through a forged signature. She demanded restitution of her deemed economic share and had previously filed an assault charge against him in June 2016, after their separation in February that year.
