### Massive Fuel Seizure in Ensenada: Nearly 2.1 Million Gallons of Gasoline Confiscated
In a significant crackdown on fuel theft, authorities in Ensenada, Baja California recently seized nearly 2.1 million gallons of stolen gasoline. This substantial operation took place on March 27, following a tip-off about dubious activities at a location along the Rosarito-Ensenada highway, near El Sauzal.
The coordinated raid, executed by the Army (Sedena), National Guard, Navy, the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR), and Pemex security teams, revealed an illegal fuel storage facility. Officials, with a search warrant in hand, uncovered the following:
– 100 container boxes, each with a capacity of 19,250 gallons
– 46 tanker trailers, each capable of holding 8,200 gallons
– 19 semi-trucks of various models
– 12 fuel pumps of different capacities
– 2 office trailers
– A cistern containing 1,050 gallons of urea
The total seized fuel amounts to approximately 2,098,000 gallons, sufficient to fill over 120,000 standard car fuel tanks. Authorities have placed all vehicles, containers, and the gasoline under federal custody while they investigate the source of the fuel and those involved in its theft.
While local reports have connected the property to ex-senator Gerardo Novelo Osuna, no official confirmation has been made about his involvement. Fuel theft, or “huachicoleo,” remains a critical problem in Mexico, incurring significant financial losses. This operation serves as a testament to law enforcement’s efforts to combat such activities, raising hope for future progress in tackling fuel theft.
