### Freight Costs to Rise with Use of Electric Trucks, Says Canacar
**Tijuana, August 6, 2024**
The cost of freight is expected to increase due to the transition to electric trucks, according to the Northwest Region Vice President of Canacar (National Chamber of Cargo Transportation), Israel Delgado Vallejo. Delgado Vallejo highlighted that the financing credits for acquiring electric trailers are three times higher compared to conventional ones, which could reflect in the freight costs.
Effective from 2025, the state of California will mandate the use of electric cargo trucks. This transition, extending gradually until 2030, will also be a requirement for freight transport crossing the border from Baja California.
Currently, a binational company is testing 11 electric trucks to assess their operational costs and transit times. “We still have 2 or more years to go to conclude, but there are many questions and few answers at this point,” Delgado Vallejo mentioned.
Delgado Vallejo stressed that the cargo transport sector is evaluating how this new mobility regulation in California won’t hinder the competitiveness of Baja California. The state government is also considering supporting the financing of electric trucks through tax incentives. However, only California is offering incentives to operators based in the state so far, which might place Mexican-based companies at a disadvantage.
### Electric Trucks Should Be Used Only for Short Distances, Says Canacar
Delgado Vallejo emphasized that electric trailers are most suitable for short distances due to the current limitations in battery technology.
### Increase in Cargo and Driver Robberies from SLRC to Mexicali
Reports indicate a rise in cargo and driver robberies along the route from San Luis RÃo Colorado (SLRC) to Mexicali, according to Canacar.
### Government Support and Incentives
There is ongoing discussion within the Baja California state government about providing financial support for the acquisition of electric trucks. The support may come in the form of tax incentives to ensure the new regulations don’t negatively impact local competitiveness.
### Additional Context and News on Electric Trucks
**New Developments in Electric Trucking**
– **California’s Incentive Programs:** California has announced new incentive programs to encourage the adoption of electric trucks. The state is offering significant rebates and grants to fleet operators who transition to electric vehicles in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
– **Technological Advancements:** Major automotive companies are investing heavily in electric truck technology. Recent advancements suggest that future models may have extended battery life and faster charge times, making long-distance travel more feasible.
– **Economic Impact Studies:** Recent studies indicate that while the initial cost for electric trucks is high, the long-term maintenance and fuel savings could offset this expense. The studies also highlight potential environmental benefits, pointing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and lower dependence on fossil fuels.
### Conclusion
The shift to electric trucks in California is set to reshape the freight industry, with increased costs being a significant concern. While there are various challenges to address, the combined efforts of the state government and incentive programs could pave the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in cargo transportation.
