## Eglantina Esquivel, Director of ‘Lucha de las Féminas’ Passes Away
Eglantina Esquivel, the prominent director of the magazine ‘Lucha de las Féminas’ and mother of photojournalist Margarito Martínez Esquivel, passed away on the morning of August 11, 2024. She succumbed to pneumonia after a 15-day hospitalization at the Issstecali hospital in Tijuana. Eglantina was 82 years old.
Born in Nogales, Sonora, she grew up in Mexicali and moved to Tijuana at the age of 15. She is survived by her daughter Rosy and two other children. Funeral services will be held at the Gayoso funeral home in Zona Río, with the date and time yet to be decided.
Eglantina made history by becoming the first woman to direct a media outlet in Tijuana with her leadership at ‘Lucha de las Féminas.’ The magazine began as a weekly publication in 1974, later transitioning to a monthly format before ceasing its circulation in 2023.
Throughout her career, Eglantina covered subjects such as politics and crime. Her last public event was on July 5, covering Freedom of Expression Day at the State Center for the Arts in Tijuana, attended by Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda.
Despite suffering health issues, Eglantina was dedicated to her work, frequently traveling to Mexicali for journalistic duties. She also served as the Director of Public Relations during the state administration of Xicoténcatl Leyva Mortera and worked at the newspapers ‘Nuevo Mundo’ and ‘ABC.’
Following the tragic murder of her son, Margarito Martínez, on January 17, 2022, Eglantina sought justice for him and fellow journalist Lourdes Maldonado. Two individuals, Manuel Ramos (alias El Uber) and José Heriberto Ochoa Díaz (alias El Huesos), have been sentenced for the crime and are serving their time at the El Hongo prison in Tecate. However, another suspect, Christian Adán (alias Cabo 16 or El Jaguar), is still awaiting sentencing, despite his trial beginning on April 30.
