**Prominent Activist and Substitute Lawmaker Diana Sánchez Barrios in Induced Coma Following Attack in Mexico City**
Diana Sánchez Barrios, a well-known activist and substitute legislator for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) at Mexico City’s Congress, is in an induced coma after a shooting incident that took place in the Centro Histórico area. The attack occurred on October 17, 2024, and was revealed by Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, the Mayor of Cuauhtémoc, the following day.
Sánchez Barrios, who is a prominent advocate for LGBT+ rights and a community leader, sustained severe injuries from the attack, necessitating emergency surgeries in a private hospital. The incident happened around 3:00 PM in the busy streets, leaving another individual dead and one more critically injured. Preliminary reports suggest the involvement of hitmen linked to the criminal organization known as La Unión Tepito.
Mayor Rojo de la Vega condemned the attack on Sánchez Barrios, who was struck by five bullets. She is calling for a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable. In response, Clara Marina Brugada Molina, head of the city’s government, announced an increase in security measures in the Centro Histórico, deploying an additional 330 officers and enhancing the surveillance camera network. She also mentioned plans to tighten checks on nightlife venues and tackle extortion.
Security footage captured the assailant, disguised in grey clothing and a surgical mask, calmly walking through the crowd before firing at his targets point-blank. The shooter then fled the scene on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice. Earlier that day, Sánchez Barrios was seen at the local Congress with her sister, Silvia Sánchez Barrios, discussing human rights for the LGBTTTIQ+ community.
The city’s Attorney General’s office initially reported the death of both men accompanying Sánchez Barrios, later clarifying that only a 32-year-old man died. The case remains under investigation, with authorities analyzing footage and tracing the vehicle used in the escape.

The incident unfolded near Parque Delta shopping center in Cuauhtémoc, when Pérez Garduño’s vehicle was ambushed by attackers on a motorcycle. Reports indicate the lawyer was shot multiple times as she returned from a bank visit. This attack has led to widespread concern over the growing violence and the pattern of using motorcycles in criminal activities within Mexico City.
Both cases highlight the urgent need for increased security measures and systemic efforts to combat organized crime in the city’s bustling urban areas.
