**5 COVID-19 Deaths and 85 Hospitalizations Reported in Baja California Sur This Year**

Although the tracking of COVID-19 cases is not as intense as it was during the peaks of the pandemic, the disease still warrants vigilant monitoring. This year alone, Baja California Sur has reported five deaths and 85 hospitalizations due to COVID-19, according to the Secretary of Health for Baja California Sur (SSABCS), Zazil Flores Aldape.

Flores Aldape acknowledged a rise in COVID-19 infections but noted that the situation remains under control. “In the past week, we had five hospitalized patients, but fortunately, there were no deaths reported since epidemiological week 28. Sadly, we have had five fatalities this year,” she reiterated.

All the recorded victims in 2024 were elderly individuals over the age of 70 who had not received the COVID-19 vaccine. The authorities highlighted the contrast with the past years’ highest points of the pandemic, where Baja California Sur reported around 300 deaths in 2023, including a grim peak in July 2021 with 257 victims.

“Only if we experience a significant resurgence or identify a variant deemed risky by the WHO would we need to implement additional measures,” added the secretary.

Alfredo Ojeda Garmendia, the Deputy Director of Epidemiology for the SSABCS, emphasized that the current monitoring strategies for COVID-19 apply the same sentinel surveillance techniques used for influenza cases. “Our recommendations remain the same, focusing on risk groups, including young children under five, older adults, particularly those over 60, and individuals with underlying health conditions,” he noted.

Garmendia listed people with diabetes, hypertension, immunosuppressive conditions, cancer, and HIV as part of the vulnerable groups at risk of severe COVID-19 complications. He stressed the importance of maintaining known sanitary measures, such as distancing from sick individuals and wearing masks in crowded places.

“To the general population, we recommend seeking medical attention if sick, staying isolated, and wearing masks properly when around others if exhibiting respiratory symptoms,” Garmendia concluded.
