**New Vision Correction Procedure Launched in Tijuana**

A pioneering new treatment for myopia, known as “CLEAR” (Corneal Lenticule Extraction for Advanced Refractive Correction), has been introduced in Tijuana by CODET Vision Institute, in collaboration with the Swiss company Ziemer, experts in ophthalmic technology. Dr. Arturo Chayet, founder and medical director of CODET Vision Institute, emphasized the significance of advancements in myopia treatments. Over the past three decades in Mexico, the prevalence of myopia has increased by approximately two percent per year, resulting in a staggering 60 percent rise overall.

Recent studies suggest that by 2050, around 50 percent of the global population will suffer from myopia, marking it as a potential global pandemic. Myopia occurs when parts of the eye cause light rays to scatter, leading to light focusing incorrectly at the front of the retina rather than the back. Symptoms include blurry vision when looking at distant objects, frequent squinting, headaches, eye fatigue, a desire to rub the eyes, and sitting close to screens to see properly.

Dr. Chayet advises limiting time spent on electronic devices to prevent myopia, taking 20-second breaks after 20 minutes of screen time to look at distant objects, avoiding rubbing eyes, and not sleeping with hands pressed against them.

**Fast Procedure with No Extended Recovery Time**

Dr. Erik Navas, co-director of the corneal service, explained that the CLEAR procedure utilizes Ziemer’s Femtosecond LDV Z8 laser to create a lenticule within the cornea, which is then extracted through a micro-incision to reshape the cornea and correct myopia. He noted that compared to other surgeries, this method maintains a stronger corneal structure due to the smaller incision.

The procedure costs $1,499, takes about 20 minutes, and does not require lengthy recovery. Patients can usually resume normal activities within 24 hours. CLEAR also reduces the risk of dry eyes post-surgery, minimizes tissue damage, and lowers inflammatory response, all contributing to faster recovery. Patients are advised to avoid eye contact with water, refrain from rubbing eyes, and steer clear of pools and saunas for at least a month post-surgery.

As per CODET Vision Institute, 250 successful CLEAR surgeries have been conducted in Tijuana since its Cofepris approval three months ago.
