The beloved canine of Tijuana, Chicles, may have retired from athletic races due to health issues, but his legacy is set to continue through his daughter, Laila. Laila made her debut at the Lucha Run 5K in Tijuana on September 8, around the Cerro Colorado delegation.
Chicles’ owner, Flecha, shared his joy on Facebook about Laila stepping onto the running scene, ensuring the presence of the adored “elite runner” remains unbroken. Flecha expressed, “The legacy and story of Chicles is unique. Now, it’s up to Laila, his daughter, to create her own story.”
Flecha noted that Laila has been well-trained by Chicles and now only needs the acceptance and affection of people to develop her talents. Due to the striking resemblance between the two dogs, Laila will wear a pink harness to avoid any confusion with Chicles.
Though Chicles will no longer participate in races, he will still make appearances at events to socialize with other runners and fans. “They too are living beings, and we share this planet. We must include, value, and respect them. Let’s not be selfish; this world belongs to all those who breathe and have a heartbeat,” Flecha concluded.
Meanwhile, Chicles is still awaiting surgery due to a femur and hip fracture. Recent blood tests indicated that Chicles must undergo detoxification for another 20 to 30 days before being ready for surgery. During this time, Chicles remains active and playful with Laila, despite needing to keep weight off his back leg.
