### Armed and Hooded Men March in Various Chiapas Municipalities to Warn Drug Cartels

#### August 7, 2024, Chiapas, Mexico

On the night of August 6, 2024, several groups of armed and masked men, who are believed to be members of self-defense organizations, made their way through the town centers of at least six municipalities in northern Chiapas. The municipalities, including Solosuchiapa, Ixtacomitán, Ixhuatán, Pueblo Nuevo, Tapilula, and Rayón, witnessed these groups walking and driving through the areas, hanging banners and distributing flyers with stark warnings intended for drug cartels.

One of the banners notably warned, “Message for the cartel: in these municipalities we do not want any cartel group. If we see their presence, we will take drastic action. We know who is involved. This is a warning; if you want war, you will have it. Attn: Out with the Cartel.” The message was signed by a group identifying themselves as the “Self-Defense of Los Altos de Chiapas.”

The flyers reiterated their stance: “We are ready to defend all municipalities against any cartel group because we do not permit extortion, charging protection fees, vehicle theft, express kidnapping, rape, and assaults. Our goal is to provide tranquility and security to all municipalities and surrounding areas, including merchants, ranchers, grocery stores, street vendors, and all those who transit here. This message also extends to authorities complicit with the cartel, such as the Prosecutor’s Office or other competent authority, who will also be held accountable.”

Video footage circulating on social media captured these events, but as of the last update, no official statement had been released by local or federal authorities.

In a grim turn of events, another video surfaced showing assassins, allegedly from the criminal group Los Herrera, executing a supposed member of the self-defense group El Machete from Pantelhó, by beheading and mutilating the body. This incident further highlights the escalating violence between the factions of Los Herrera and El Machete in Pantelhó and Chenalhó, leading to the forced displacement of dozens of families.

Additionally, throughout July 2024, the increasing violence in Chiapas, notably in the Sierra region bordering Guatemala, has caused hundreds of residents to flee from their homes in municipalities such as Motozintla, Amatenango de la Frontera, and Comalapa due to drug-related violence.

### Secondary Article: Rising Tensions in Chiapas: Community Responses and Government Actions

In light of the recent unrest in Chiapas, further reports have emerged detailing the community and governmental responses to escalating violence in the region.

Local communities have started to form more self-defense groups to protect against drug cartel infiltration and violent disputes. According to local sources, these groups have seen a significant increase in membership, reflecting growing public concern about security and the perceived inaction from official authorities.

Government officials at both state and federal levels have been pressed to address the violence more effectively. Recent meetings between law enforcement agencies and community leaders indicate a collaborative approach to combatting cartel influence. However, skepticism remains high among residents who argue that corruption and collusion with cartels within law enforcement and other governmental departments hinder real progress.

A task force has been proposed to increase military presence in the most affected areas, and there have been discussions around implementing community policing initiatives. However, any definitive action remains to be seen.

Further complicating the situation, humanitarian organizations are reporting distressing conditions for the displaced families. Efforts are underway to set up temporary shelters and provide essential aid, but resources are strained, and the ongoing violence poses continuous challenges.

As Chiapas remains in a precarious balance between self-defense initiatives and official interventions, the hope for a sustainable peace appears to rest on the cooperation between communities and a trustworthy and concerted effort by the government to address the root causes of the violence.
