Checks Concern Business Leaders

Business leaders caution against potential overrepresentation by Morena and allies in Congress, emphasizing the need for checks and balances to safeguard democratic principles and economic stability in Mexico.

### Concerns Over Lack of Checks and Balances in Legislative Power Worry Business Leaders
**August 7, 2024**

Business leaders are expressing deep concerns about the potential overrepresentation of Morena and its allied parties in the upcoming Congress of the Union. Roberto Vega SolĂs, president of the Confederation of Employers of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) in Tijuana, highlighted that if the Green Party, Morena, and the Labor Party secure more than 54% of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies, it would violate Article 54 of the Mexican Constitution, which states that no party can have more than 300 legislators in the Chamber.

“We have conducted a thorough analysis of the law and the Mexican Constitution and it is clear in Article 54 that no party can hold more than 300 seats. We are concerned that 54% of the vote could translate into 75% representation due to unclear circumstances. We need to trust the National Electoral Institute (INE) and, if necessary, the Federal Electoral Tribunal to ensure fairness,” Vega SolĂs said.

Vega SolĂs emphasized the necessity of maintaining a balance between powers, warning that the concentration of power in the hands of one group could pose a significant risk to the country. “It is crucial that the balance is maintained. The division of powers is essential for the viability of the country. We see a risk in having a singular central power, which is not ideal because human error is unavoidable. The system of checks and balances has worked well in Mexico and allows for correction if mistakes are made,” he added.

In addition, the president of Coparmex Tijuana voiced specific concerns about the proposed Judicial Reform, which could potentially deter foreign investment. “If the Judicial Reform goes through, it could create legal uncertainty, leading to a decline in investment due to a lack of confidence. Foreign entrepreneurs would not have the ability to dispute with the authorities, making autonomy crucial for upholding rights,” he concluded.

### Further Developments: Mexican Business Leaders Call for Electoral Integrity

In light of the upcoming legislative elections, several business leaders across Mexico have echoed Vega SolĂs’s concerns. There is a growing call for electoral integrity and the preservation of democratic principles to ensure that no single party holds an overwhelming majority in the legislative chambers. This sentiment is shared by various industry stakeholders who fear that an imbalance could harm the country’s economic stability and governance.
