CECyTE Workers Bonus Crisis

CECyTE workers in Baja California Sur demand justice for unpaid bonuses, risking strike action if not resolved by August 12. Meanwhile, ejidatarios protest urban development plans, stirring land rights concerns.

### CECyTE Workers Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Bonus

Workers from the College of Scientific and Technological Studies (CECyTE) in Baja California Sur are protesting over the non-payment of a bonus amounting to more than six million pesos, which is guaranteed by their collective bargaining agreement.

According to Edel Mares Rodríguez, the general secretary of the CECyTE Union in Baja California Sur, the funds should have been disbursed over a week ago but were not. This bonus, mandated by Article 138, Section II, of their contract, was supposed to be paid by July 31.

“Currently, at CECyTE, and especially within the Union, we are witnessing a contractual violation,” explained Mares Rodríguez. “We are demanding that our employer respects this article and upholds the labor rights of all workers in this state. We are seeking justice above all.”

This unresolved issue affects more than 550 tenured employees who have yet to receive the payment. Each worker is due a bonus exceeding 10,000 pesos.

“We are counting on these resources, which, unfortunately, have not arrived. The impact is significant on a personal and family level,” Mares Rodríguez added. “Especially in these times, the money is crucial. Therefore, we demand justice and respect for the workers.”

The union is currently in negotiations with authorities in Baja California Sur. On August 9, a meeting involving the Secretary of Finance, Bertha Montaño, and the General Secretary of State Government, Saúl González, is scheduled to seek a favorable solution.

Should their demands not be met, the union has warned that they will begin formal proceedings and potentially initiate a strike starting August 12.

“We are prepared to take lawful union actions if we do not receive a favorable response,” stated Mares Rodríguez.
