CBP One Expands Asylum Access

**Expanded CBP One Coverage Facilitates Legal Asylum Process** Effective August 23, CBP One’s expanded reach allows migrants in Mexico to request asylum evaluations without traveling north. Increased daily appointment availability promotes legal, safe entry.

### Expanded CBP One Coverage for Appointment Requests Starting This Friday

Starting this Friday, August 23, the CBP One application, where individuals in transit can request an appointment to evaluate their eligibility for asylum in the United States, has expanded its geographical coverage. The new guidelines mean that foreign migrants no longer need to travel to the northern states of Mexico. Instead, they can now request appointments from Tabasco, Chiapas, as well as from Mexico City and states north of it.

According to the U.S. Consul General in Tijuana, Christopher Teal, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers will attend to 400 people daily in Tijuana to begin their asylum or humanitarian parole process. “We have a capacity limit, there’s a lot of demand, but it’s working quite well. It’s important for those waiting for their appointment to continue to wait. It will come, the process will come. It’s better to enter legally and have their status settled than to try other methods,” Teal emphasized.

In Mexicali, there will be 75 daily appointments for CBP One applicants, totaling 1,450 appointments across eight posts along the border.

The official also noted that due to President Joe Biden’s decree, which came into effect on June 5 to reduce the number of irregular crossings and prevent asylum for those entering the United States illegally, such crossings have decreased by approximately 40%. “Irregular flow has significantly dropped. These are the lowest numbers we’ve seen in four years. We’re seeing people listening and following these rules, not falling into traps set by coyotes who want to deceive them,” Teal remarked.

In another noteworthy development, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered 360 pounds of fentanyl and cocaine concealed within a tractor-trailer. This record-breaking seizure highlights ongoing efforts to curb drug smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border.

### Related Developments

The expansion of CBP One’s geographical coverage and the reduction in irregular crossings coincide with increased vigilance and enforcement efforts by U.S. authorities. Migrants now have more accessible pathways for legal entry applications, potentially reducing the risk associated with illegal crossings and exploitation by human traffickers.
