## Jesús Castillo Secures Mexico’s 17th Medal at the Paralympic Games

With an impressive lift of 222 kilograms, José de Jesús Castillo Castillo has earned a bronze medal in para powerlifting, bringing Mexico its 17th medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The competition took place at La Chapelle Arena.

During his first attempt, the athlete from Jalisco initially had his lift of 222 kilograms marked as incorrectly executed by the judge. Upon requesting a review, the decision was overturned in his favor. However, he experienced discomfort in his chest during the second lift, preventing him from reaching the 231-kilogram mark.

“I felt a sharp pain in my left pectoral during the second lift, but it doesn’t appear to be serious. I was ready to give it my all in the third lift,” said Castillo, who also won a bronze medal in Rio 2016.

To avoid a significant injury, his team decided to withdraw him from attempting a third lift, making his first attempt sufficient to secure third place. The gold medal was claimed by Iran’s Aliakbar Gharibshahi, who set a new Paralympic record with a lift of 252 kilograms. Mongolia’s Sodnompiljee Enjbayar took the silver with a lift of 248 kilograms.

With this bronze, Mexico concluded its participation in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games with a total of 17 medals: three golds, six silvers, and eight bronzes. The Mexican delegation finished in 30th place overall, with para swimming contributing the most medals (seven), followed by para athletics (six), and both para powerlifting and para taekwondo with two each.

In total medal counts, China dominated with 94 golds, 76 silvers, and 50 bronzes (220), followed by Great Britain with 49 golds, 44 silvers, and 31 bronzes (124), and the United States with 36 golds, 42 silvers, and 27 bronzes (105).
