### Carlos Sansores Narrowly Misses Podium in Paris

Mexican taekwondo athlete Carlos Sansores came agonizingly close to clinching a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, narrowly missing out on a podium finish in the +80 kilograms category. Despite his best efforts, Sansores lost 1-2 in the bronze medal match against Cheick Cissé from Ivory Coast, the current world champion.

This loss meant that Mexico’s tally at the Olympics remained at three silver and two bronze medals, failing to surpass the six medals (of the same color distribution) they achieved during the Rio 2016 Games, with only one day left before the closing ceremony.

Sansores, a triple world medalist, began his day with a convincing 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau’s Johnouario Gomis, scoring a total of 15 points compared to Gomis’ two. Next, he faced Iranian Arian Salimi in the quarterfinals, winning the first round 2-1 but eventually losing the following rounds 6-4 and 12-0, which sent him into the repechage for a chance at the bronze.

In the repechage, Sansores showed resilience and overcame Uzbek triple world medalist Nikita Rafalovich with a 2-1 win, securing his place in the bronze medal bout.

The nail-biting match against Cissé was a rematch of the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships final, which Cissé had also won. In Paris, it was another close encounter but ultimately ended in Cissé’s favor, with the match decided in the final seconds of the third round. Thus, Sansores concluded his Olympic journey without the coveted medal.
