Founded in 2006, the Caracol Tijuana International Poetry Festival returns in 2024, organized by Yohanna Jaramillo and Jesús García Mora. This year’s event will take place from September 26th to 28th across various venues in Tijuana and Mexicali.

“One of the objectives of the Caracol Tijuana International Poetry Festival is to promote literature from Baja California and Mexico through an international festival at the border,” stated Yohanna Jaramillo. She noted that unlike previous years, this edition will feature a smaller program.

“Our main support has come from the Baja California Institute of Cultural Services and the Baja California Secretary of Culture, along with UNIPAC University, the Tijuana Cultural Center, and various artists, restaurants, chefs, designers, and musicians. Given that Baja California can’t always fund every festival, we streamlined the program, but maintained Caracol Tijuana’s mission. Thanks to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), we will have discussions on Brazilian literature with Dr. Antonio Andrade and contributions from writer Minerva Reynosa,” she added.

Discussing the importance of the festival’s continuity, Jaramillo expressed concerns about the recurring violence in Tijuana. “Violence perpetuated by some media industries affects the city’s development. Reading fosters communication, grounding our ideas and conversations. The festival has visited all seven municipalities in the state and indigenous communities, fostering cultural exchange. We hold book and magazine presentations, literary translation panels, discussions, public readings in multiple languages, children’s literary workshops, and open mic sessions.”

This year’s program includes visits to UABC Tijuana and Mexicali campuses, the Colegio de la Frontera Norte, a poetry reading at Galería Planta Libre in Mexicali, and an open mic session at Ediciones Caradura in Tijuana. Notable attendees include Minerva Reynosa, Antonio Andrade, Matt Sedillo (USA), Sonia Gutiérrez and Vanessa Torres (Colombia), and several regional poets.
