On Sunday, September 15, 2024, the inaugural “Binational Race” will take place, offering a unique experience that connects two countries, the United States and Mexico. The Tijuana Tourism and Conventions Committee (Cotuco) has announced this historic athletic event, which will start in San Ysidro and finish in Playas de Tijuana.

Gilberto Gamiño Herrera, the secretary of Cotuco, emphasized the significance of such events that bring together the binational region and help project Tijuana on an international level. “Without a doubt, events like these strengthen the relationship between the United States and Mexico. It’s a very interesting race that offers the historic opportunity to cross the border, thanks to the efforts of the organizers who support this initiative,” he said.

Benjamín Castillo Ramírez, the director of the Mexico Binational Race, mentioned that this race represents a day of unity, cooperation, and celebration between the neighboring countries. He explained, “It’s essentially two races that come together as one, starting in San Diego, California, and finishing in Tijuana, Baja California, showcasing the strength of the friendship between the two nations.”

The director mentioned that this event consists of a half marathon and a 10k run, the first of its kind, emphasizing the shared values and cultures that unite both communities. More than just a sporting event, the Binational Race provides a unique opportunity for participants to experience the seamless connection between two cultures.

The event will kick off with the half marathon at 6:30 AM from Las Americas Premium Outlets in San Diego. The 10K run will start in Tijuana at 7:15 AM at the Puente de Sánchez Taboada near Costco, merging into the International route.

Participants will begin the race in San Diego and cross the United States-Mexico border, finishing in Tijuana. “As participants cross the finish line in Tijuana, they will be welcomed by a cultural festival celebrating the rich heritage of both nations, complete with local music, food, and art,” added Benjamín Castillo.
