BCS Judicial Reform Passed

BCS Congress swiftly approves reform to the Judicial Power while facing protests from Federal Judicial Power employees. Morena-led initiative advances despite opposition concerns over judiciary independence.

### BCS Congress Approves Judicial Power Reform

This afternoon, in a swift four-hour session, the Congress of the State of Baja California Sur approved a reform to the Judicial Power. This came just hours after being endorsed by the Senate on the night of Tuesday, September 10.

Amid protests from employees of the Federal Judicial Power (PJF), legislators from Morena, the Labor Party (PT), New Alliance, and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) cast 19 votes in favor of the initiative.

On the other hand, Guadalupe Saldaña Cisneros of the National Action Party (PAN) and Fabrizio del Castillo Miranda of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) were the only two legislators to cast opposing votes.

Opposition legislator Guadalupe Saldaña pointed out that the extraordinary session was hastily convened just minutes before it started. Meanwhile, protesters accused the legislators who voted in favor of being traitors to the nation, claiming they had surrendered the autonomy and independence of the Judicial Power to the Morena regime.

Protesters emphasized that electing judges, magistrates, and ministers through popular vote would not eliminate corruption. Instead, it would place these high-ranking positions at the service of the ruling political party.

With this decision, the Legislative Power of Baja California Sur became the fifth state congress to approve the judicial reform. A total of 17 local congresses are needed to join in for the reform to be promulgated.
