Authorities in Baja California Sur have activated the State Council of Civil Protection due to the forecasted impact of Tropical Storm “Ileana.”

According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), the phenomenon is expected to make landfall in the municipality of La Paz at around 00:00 hours on Saturday, September 14th. Afterward, it will cross the peninsula toward the mainland.

In anticipation of heavy rainfall, potentially accumulating up to 150mm, state governor Víctor Castro Cosío has proposed the suspension of classes in all shifts and educational levels in La Paz and Los Cabos for Friday, September 13th. The governor also mentioned that they will observe the storm’s progression to decide whether to cancel Independence Day celebrations, with updates to be provided to the public in a timely manner.

As per the latest update from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), “Ileana” is located 305 kilometers west-northwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 255 kilometers southeast of Cabo San Lucas. The storm exhibits sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 95 km/h, prompting authorities to maintain a tropical storm warning zone from San Evaristo to Loreto in Baja California Sur and from Topolobampo, Sinaloa, to Huatabampito, Sonora.

By 12:00 noon on Friday, September 13th, the storm is expected to be very close to Cabo San Lucas, about 25 kilometers away and 175 kilometers south-southwest of La Paz.

Residents are urged to take precautions and heed recommendations issued by the State Council of Civil Protection.
