# Baja California’s Medical Device Industry Boasts Predominantly Female Workforce

## Promoting Female Representation in Leadership

The medical device sector in Baja California employs over 80,000 individuals, with a workforce composed entirely of women, according to Rosa María Castañeda, Vice President of the state’s Medical Devices Cluster. “The medical device industry, especially those activities requiring meticulous attention to detail, employs women 100%. Additionally, we have greatly focused on encouraging women to assume leadership roles,” she noted.

## Baja California: Leading Exporter to the United States

Besides employing a large female workforce, Baja California stands out as the largest exporter of medical devices to the United States. The industry produces items such as respirators, heart valves, and face masks. Unlike other sectors, there is no shortage of labor in medical device manufacturing. The workforce remains stable, with some employees staying in the same position for up to 25 years.

Castañeda also mentioned that new products continue to arrive in the region for manufacturing, which drives ongoing recruitment. “We are constantly hiring. For instance, one of the companies based in Tijuana alone employs close to 10,000 people,” she said.

## Addressing Workforce Challenges

Despite the stable workforce, personnel turnover remains a challenge. However, the Cluster has undertaken collaborative workshops to minimize turnover rates. “We have organized sessions where companies discuss their turnover rates. Some companies experience higher rates than others, but it often comes down to the mentality of ‘I’ll go where they offer more,’ which can be both advantageous and detrimental,” Castañeda explained.
