Evander García Soto from Baja California triumphantly claimed the championship title in the Boxing event of the 2024 National Popular Games held in Oaxaca de Juárez. Competing in the challenging 66-kilogram division, García secured his victory by a split decision against César Laguna, representing the state of Veracruz. The final match took place on August 25 at the “Hermanos Flores Magón” Sports Complex.

“I’m incredibly happy and proud, mainly because of all the training I put in to achieve this. You have to work very hard and for a long time to earn this belt. The opponent was very fast, but we studied his moves and had a clear plan to win,” stated García, who has high ambitions for his boxing career.

“My goal next year is to become the champion again in this event, but in the future, I aim for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics,” he emphasized.

In addition to García’s triumph, Baja Californians Yeimi Leonardo Serena Félix and Britani Rivero García won silver medals. Moreover, Roberto López and Héctor Macías earned bronze medals, contributing to Baja California’s overall tally of one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

Diego Morales, the head of the boxing delegation, highlighted the competition’s high level and the challenges posed by the altitude.

“The level has definitely increased. We had high expectations, especially with three boxers who came with a lot of experience. They performed regularly and at a good level. However, the altitude was a significant factor from the start of the tournament,” commented the former world champion.

“We plan to continue working so that the upcoming boxers gain more experience. Next October, three Baja Californians will participate in an international tournament in Chile, followed by another event in Argentina in December to wrap up the year,” Morales announced.
