# Baja California Reports Zero Mpox Cases in 2024
## By TJ Gringo Staff | August 16, 2024
The Health Secretariat of Baja California has announced that, so far in 2024, there have been no reported cases of mpox, also known as monkeypox, in the state. Authorities confirmed that neither local transmissions nor imported cases have been documented.
Adrián Medina Amarillas, the Secretary of Health, emphasized that Baja California continues to follow the epidemiological surveillance protocol set by the National Committee for Epidemiological Surveillance (CONAVE). This protocol aims to promptly detect, treat patients, and report cases to minimize the spread of the virus in Mexico.
Medina Amarillas detailed the symptoms of mpox, which include fever, chills, headache, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, and noticeable swollen lymph nodes following the initial symptoms. If diagnosed, treatment focuses on maintaining patient hydration, symptomatic treatment, temperature control, avoiding manipulation of skin lesions (which should be covered with bandages or sheets), and monitoring the patient for 21 days.
The Secretary highlighted that mpox does not spread as easily as COVID-19. The virus requires direct or close contact, such as through skin wounds, mucous membranes, sexual intercourse, or prolonged face-to-face interactions.
In a historical context, Medina Amarillas noted that Baja California recorded 32 cases of mpox in 2022, all imported, and the number fell to three cases in 2023, with no reported fatalities.
Lastly, he urged the public to continue preventive measures, such as maintaining social distance while traveling and paying attention to signs and symptoms of mpox. In case of suspicion, individuals are advised to seek evaluation at medical units.
