### Baja California Reports No Monkeypox Cases in 2024
**Mexicali** – Baja California maintains a clean slate with no reported cases of monkeypox, also known as mpox, so far in 2024. This information was confirmed by the Secretary of Health, J. Adrián Medina Amarillas. Despite the reported cases in other regions, Baja California remains vigilant through the epidemiological surveillance protocols established by the National Committee for Epidemiological Surveillance (CONAVE). These measures are crucial to identify, treat promptly, and report any cases to prevent the spread within Mexico.
**Symptom Awareness and Protocols in Place**
Medina Amarillas emphasized the critical symptoms to watch for with mpox: fever, chills, headaches, extreme fatigue, and muscle pain. Following these initial symptoms, patients may experience swollen and prominent lymph nodes. The treatment protocol includes maintaining constant hydration, symptomatic treatment, thermal control, and avoiding lesion manipulation by covering them with bandages or sheets. Patients are also monitored for 21 days post-diagnosis to ensure effective management.
While mpox does not spread as easily as COVID-19, it requires close or direct contact, such as through skin wounds, mucous membranes, sexual contact, or prolonged face-to-face interactions. In 2022, Baja California had 32 imported cases, decreasing to just 3 in 2023, with no fatalities reported. Medina Amarillas urged the public to practice preventive measures, especially when traveling, and to seek medical attention if they suspect mpox infection.
