**APBC Criticizes “Alito” Moreno’s Bid for Re-election as PRI Leader**
Tijuana, August 6, 2024 – The Baja California Political Group (APBC) has voiced strong opposition to the potential re-election of Alejandro “Alito” Moreno Cárdenas and Carolina Viggiano Austria as president and secretary-general of the National Executive Committee of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).
In a statement addressed to the PRI’s Internal Elections Commission, APBC members, identifying themselves as “distinguished members and supporters,” emphasized that for 50 years they have adhered to the PRI’s ideological principles and fought for the respect of the party’s foundational documents. They argue that the candidacies of “Alito” Moreno and Carolina Viggiano violate the principle of non-reelection within the party.
On July 7, the party’s statutes were modified to remove the prohibition against reelecting a party leader, allowing Moreno and Viggiano to register on July 22 for an internal election. Competing with them were Lorena Piñón Rivera and Cuauhtémoc Betanzos, who also signed up for the leadership and secretary-general positions, respectively.
However, Article 34 of the General Law of Political Parties prohibits changing foundational documents during an ongoing electoral process, such as the current period during which the PRI’s statutes were modified. This legal obstacle prompted former leaders Dulce María Sauri, Enrique Ochoa Reza, Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, and Manlio Fabio Beltrones Rivera to challenge the XXIV National Assembly, which approved the statute change, and the leadership renewal process.
APBC members also argued that since their tenure began in 2019, “Alito” and Viggiano have demonstrated “ineptitude” by presiding over significant public space and election losses. The reelection of the former governor of Campeche and the former candidate for Hidalgo’s government will be decided on August 11 by PRI representatives.
“We strongly oppose the candidacies of Alejandro Moreno and Carolina Viggiano,” declared APBC members.
The statement was signed on July 31, 2024, by prominent APBC members, including Juan Carlos Barrera León, Gustavo Alcocer Pérez, and others.

**Developing Story: Controversy Surrounds PRI Leadership Reelection**
Amidst the unfolding debate within the PRI, further concerns have arisen regarding the reelection process. Critics argue that recent modifications to party statutes reflect a strategic move to ensure the continuity of current leadership rather than a democratic process.
Political analysts suggest that the controversial statute change could lead to internal factionalism within the PRI, weakening its position in upcoming national elections. Observers are closely watching whether the grievances filed by former leaders will gain traction and potentially overturn the recent amendments.
As the PRI navigates this contentious period, other political parties are seizing the opportunity to consolidate their bases and attract disillusioned PRI members. Reports indicate that internal discord might prompt a significant realignment of party loyalties impacting Mexico’s broader political landscape ahead of the 2024 elections.
