### A Tree and Tribute for Ana Velia Guzmán at UABC
In honor of the esteemed journalist Ana Velia Guzmán, a commemorative tree has been planted at the Faculty of Humanities on the Tijuana campus of the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC). The tribute, organized by the Baja California College of Communicators (Colcombc), featured a forum where colleagues and family members shared memories and celebrated her impactful work.
During the event, Guzmán’s family received accolades acknowledging her significant contributions as both the academic vice president of Colcombc and posthumously, recognized by the UABC Tijuana Faculty of Humanities. “Ana Velia Guzmán was more than a journalist; she was a champion of free speech and gave a voice to those facing injustice through her reporting,” expressed Diana Merchant, Director of the Faculty of Humanities at UABC. Merchant emphasized the importance of continuing Guzmán’s legacy through actions that uphold freedom of expression.
President of Colcombc, Isaías Plascencia, praised Guzmán for her unmatched passion: “Ana Velia was love and fervor in every word and deed. She touched hearts, changed lives, cherished her family and profession with passion.”
Former colleague Odilón García reminisced about Guzmán’s fearless journalism: “Her work in challenging environments, like high-incidence tuberculosis areas, demonstrated her values and dedication to social cohesion.”
Guzmán passed away on September 30, 2024, following a courageous battle with breast cancer since 2021. Despite her illness, she continued her roles as an educator at UABC and in journalism, serving as a correspondent for the French government channel, France 24, and working with TV Azteca and Televisa Baja California.
