### Prominent Journalist Ana Velia Guzmán Passes Away

Journalist and professor Ana Velia Guzmán has sadly passed away, according to information shared by her family on Monday morning, September 30, 2024. Over the past three weeks, Guzmán’s health had severely deteriorated, with treatments becoming ineffective and doctors recommending palliative care to manage her pain.

Ana Velia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and had undergone chemotherapy and various check-ups to monitor potential metastasis. On August 1, she was hospitalized due to low platelet levels and spent a week at IMSS Clinic 20 before being discharged with a guarded prognosis.

Guzmán was a strong advocate for blood donation, recognizing its critical importance. “The importance of the culture of blood donation, because giving life while alive is priceless. And insisting on that, if you receive life from another person, you should be grateful and replenish it because it will save your life and others’,” she expressed during an interview.

In her battle with cancer, she always showed gratitude towards the medical professionals who treated her. Professionally, she found joy in covering health-related news and understood the complexities of cancer treatments.

Apart from her work as a professor at UABC, Guzmán served as a correspondent for France 24, hosted “Hechos Baja California” on TV Azteca from 2010 to 2018, and reported for Televisa Baja California between 1999 and 2006. She also worked as an independent trainer and was the Academic Vice President of the Baja California College of Communicators.

Ana Velia is survived by her husband, Alberto Barajas, and their son, Daniel Barajas Guzmán.
