During a packed event in Mexico City’s Constitution Plaza, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador dedicated his final “Grito de Independencia” to the political movement he leads, the Cuarta Transformación (Fourth Transformation). Celebrating the 214th anniversary of the commencement of the Independence movement, the Tabasco native delivered his last Independence shout on the night of September 15, 2024.
Moments before stepping out onto the balcony of the National Palace, thousands of Mexicans chanted, “It is an honor to be with López Obrador.” Once on the balcony, holding the national emblem, AMLO proclaimed, “Viva la Cuarta Transformación!” He then enthusiastically shouted “Viva México” three times while ringing the historic bell.
The patriotic cries began with “Viva la Independencia” and were met with loud responses of “Viva!” from the thousands of attendees at Zócalo. López Obrador went on to honor historical figures who fought for the nation’s independence: “¡Viva Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla!”, “¡Viva Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez!”, “¡Viva Ignacio Allende!”, and “¡Vive Leona Vicario!”
