In the VII National Extraordinary Congress of MORENA held today, Andrés López Beltrán announced his candidacy for the position of Organization Secretary. This role will be decided upon later today, Sunday, September 22.

Andrés López Beltrán, the son of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, committed to preserving what he termed the legacy and direction established by his father, who is the founder of MORENA. President López Obrador is set to retire from his presidential duties on September 30.

“Our work in this secretariat will preserve that legacy, that direction. He is retiring because he promised to step down once a generational shift took place, and please understand that this shift refers to our elected president, our comrade Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” stated López Beltrán in front of the congress members gathered today in Mexico City.

During today’s assembly, MORENA members will also vote for the National Executive Committee president and the general secretary. Luisa María Alcalde, the current Secretary of the Interior, is among the candidates for the National Executive Committee’s presidency, with support from federal deputies, President AMLO, and other party leaders.

The newly elected officials will be inducted into their respective positions this Sunday. The new National Executive Committee members will begin their roles on October 1, which allows Luisa María Alcalde to complete her duties as Secretary of the Interior by September 30.
