AMLO Sheinbaum Transition Set

Coordination Committee for Transition established between AMLO and Sheinbaum for a smooth transfer of power; no extra funds allocated for 2024 transition.

### Transition Coordination Committee to Be Established Between AMLO and Sheinbaum; No Additional Funds Allocated, Says AMLO

On August 22, 2024, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the president-elect of Mexico, announced the formation of a Coordination Committee for the Transition. The committee will consist of outgoing and incoming officials from the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). The committee’s purpose is to facilitate a smooth transfer of power following AMLO’s term.

Representing the current federal government in this committee will be Luisa María Alcalde Luján, the Secretary of the Interior (SEGOB), while Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez will represent the incoming administration in the same role. “Both Secretaries of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde and Rosa Icela Rodríguez, are already coordinating,” Sheinbaum Pardo stated during a press conference from her transition office in Iztapalapa.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that plans for the formal establishment of the committee would be finalized during an upcoming trip with the president. “It will likely be established formally on Monday [August 26] or Tuesday [August 27, 2024]. This marks the beginning of the formal transition period, which will last through August and September, leading up to October 1, 2024,” added the president-elect.

On August 21, 2024, President López Obrador published an agreement in the Diario Oficial de la Federación (DOF) specifying the terms for the transition. This agreement outlines that both outgoing and incoming officials must deliver reports on various administrative aspects, including human resources, financials, ongoing projects, and more.

Notably, unlike the 150 million pesos allocated for transition purposes in 2018, no additional funds will be designated for the 2024 transition. Any expenses incurred must be covered by existing budgets of federal institutions, as stated in the agreement. The agreement mandates that all personnel involved in the transition process comply with transparency, data protection, and accountability regulations.

#### Reflecting More on the Transition Process

As the transition process begins, various experts have weighed in on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the incoming administration. A transparent and efficient transfer of information is critical to ensure continuity and stability.

Some political analysts have expressed concerns regarding the absence of additional funding. “Adequate financial resources are essential for an effective transition. Relying entirely on existing budgets may strain federal institutions,” remarked a political analyst.

On the other hand, supporters of AMLO’s decision argue that this approach aligns with his administration’s commitment to austerity and efficient governance. “The focus should be on making the most of available resources, ensuring a smooth and cost-effective transition,” commented another observer.

As the nation prepares for this significant change, the coming weeks will be crucial in setting the stage for Sheinbaum’s administration to tackle the challenges and priorities awaiting them.
