AMLO Prolongs ‘Chocolates’ Policy

AMLO extends “chocolates” vehicle regularization until 2026, aiding migrants in legalizing imported vehicles, boosting revenue for infrastructure projects, and enhancing public safety.

### AMLO Extends “Chocolates” Vehicle Regularization Until 2026

In the final days of his administration, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has extended the regularization of imported used vehicles, commonly known as “chocolates,” until September 30, 2026. This extension was published in the evening edition of the Official Gazette on September 26, 2024, issued by the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit.

The decision to prolong the regularization program stems from its favorable reception and continuous demand from those seeking to legitimize their imported vehicles. This initiative applies to vehicles in 16 Mexican states with high migrant populations from the United States and Canada. These states include Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, and Zacatecas.

The decree and its extensions have allowed for the regularization of approximately 2,559,256 vehicles. This process has provided legal certainty and asset protection for citizens and contributed to public safety by facilitating the identification of vehicle owners, thus helping prevent their use in criminal activities.

Moreover, the program has generated substantial revenue, with around 6.398 billion pesos collected. These funds have enabled various pavement projects across participating municipalities, benefiting local residents and adjacent areas.
