## AMLO Acknowledges Harfuch’s Work in CDMX; “Results Matter in Politics,” He Says
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has expressed his confidence in Omar Hamid García Harfuch, who is set to become the next head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) during the anticipated administration of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico’s president-elect.
During a morning press conference held at the National Palace’s Treasury Room on August 8, 2024, President López Obrador informed the press that he had recently met with García Harfuch to review the current national security agenda. The President praised García Harfuch’s track record in Mexico City, where he served as the head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), attributing his effectiveness to the verifiable results he achieved.
“Harfuch was with us; we discussed everything related to security and how we are currently operating. He was the Security Secretary of Mexico City,” López Obrador said. “He knows the strategy we are following, which is primarily to address the root causes based on the principle that peace is the fruit of justice. He was an excellent Secretary of Public Security in Mexico City, and while results aren’t everything in politics, they do count.”
President López Obrador emphasized the importance of addressing underlying causes, providing jobs, supporting youth, maintaining family unity, combating corruption, and coordinating effectively across security agencies. He stated these elements are essential for achieving significant security improvements.
The President highlighted that during Sheinbaum Pardo’s administration in Mexico City, notable security advancements were achieved, including a 44% reduction in homicides and nearly a 50% decrease in vehicle thefts. “Mexico City has become one of the safest cities in the world. This was especially evident when Sheinbaum was the head of government, and Harfuch was in charge of public security,” he noted.
In addition to García Harfuch, López Obrador revealed he also met with Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, who will be the next head of the Federal Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT). Together, they have been inspecting and reviewing ongoing and upcoming construction projects.
