On September 12, 2024, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged the fear that has gripped the population of Sinaloa amid confrontations involving members of the Sinaloa Cartel. Despite the efforts of the military, the National Guard, and state security forces, the violence continues to unsettle residents.

During his daily morning press conference, held at the Treasury Hall in the National Palace, López Obrador attempted to downplay the violence, noting that only two homicides were reported in the state on September 11, 2024.

“The Army, in coordination with the Navy, National Guard, and State Police, are vigilant. We want to assure the people of Culiacán and Sinaloa that our presence is sufficient to ensure peace and tranquility,” the president stated. He presented a graphic showing the number of homicides reported the previous day but had to correct himself when his spokesperson, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, noted that the data reflected the previous month.

Despite conflicting reports about the actual number of fatalities, López Obrador maintained that the situation was under control. “There is fear, but we are vigilant. The reported confrontations might have other causes, and the two homicides could stem from disputes between groups,” he explained.

A reporter questioned whether the violence was linked to the reported kidnapping of Ismael Mario Zambada García, alias “El Mayo,” by Joaquín Guzmán López, “El Güero Moreno,” the son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Both incidents are believed to be connected to the murder of Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda, leader of the Sinaloa Party (PAS), on July 25, 2024. López Obrador affirmed that the violence resulted from these group confrontations.

Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya announced the suspension of school activities in several municipalities, including Culiacán de Rosales, due to the ongoing violence. He assured citizens that the government is committed to their safety.

Sinaloa’s State Attorney General’s Office reported that from September 9 to 11, ongoing cartel disputes resulted in at least nine murders and fourteen kidnappings in Culiacán and Eldorado. Additionally, eleven people were injured during the clashes, and sixteen robbery investigations involving vehicles were opened.

Claudia Zulema Sánchez Kondo, head of the state’s Attorney General’s Office, confirmed that investigations have been launched in response to numerous reports of crimes. She stated that several victims had been identified and their bodies returned to their families.
