During the 12th National Alcoholics Anonymous Week, the Central Mexican General Services of Alcoholics Anonymous provided critical information on alcoholism to adolescents and young adults across various schools in Tijuana, Tecate, Playas de Rosarito, and Ensenada. A representative from one of the over 170 AA support groups explained the initiative aimed to inform the youth about the dangers of alcoholism.

Sergio, an AA member, highlighted the collaborative efforts with government and private institutions to distribute posters containing valuable details about the disease and the group’s work. This particular week, running from September 16 to 29, 2024, focuses primarily on youth to encourage them to seek help before alcoholism becomes a significant issue in their lives, potentially leading to a better quality of life.

“We observe that most individuals in AA develop alcoholism during adolescence, some even from childhood, hence the emphasis on the younger community during this week, although our program is open to all ages,” stated Sergio. Many young people believe alcohol is just part of growing up and do not recognize it as a disease. However, over time, it’s evident that they are dealing with alcoholism.

The AA program involves self-therapy sessions lasting an hour and a half, and attendance is voluntary. “We are not a rehabilitation center,” Sergio clarified, noting that AA groups sustain themselves through their own contributions.

Anyone grappling with drinking issues or knowing someone who is, can contact AA for more information at 664 624-14-18 or visit their website www.aabc.mx. Parents are also encouraged to attend sessions to understand the dynamics better, and to potentially guide their children or friends toward help if needed.

### Secondary Article: Youth Alcohol Consumption Trends

A recent surge in alcohol consumption among youth in Baja California has been a growing concern, with statistics showing a significant rise in underage drinking rates over the past few years. According to local health officials, this trend poses severe risks to both mental and physical health, leading to potentially long-term consequences.

Health experts say that early intervention programs, like the one led by Alcoholics Anonymous, are crucial in combating this issue. Research indicates that adolescents who engage in binge drinking are more likely to face academic problems, social issues, and a higher likelihood of substance abuse later in life.

In response to these alarming trends, the government has been working alongside organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous to implement educational programs in schools, aiming to raise awareness and provide support to affected youths. The goal is to equip them with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed decisions and seek help if needed.

These efforts are timely and essential as the community rallies to address underage drinking and its effects comprehensively. By continuing to foster collaborative relationships between educational institutions, health organizations, and local authorities, there is hope for a significant reduction in youth alcohol consumption in the future.
